Metabolic Syndrome

(Syndrome X)

What is Syndrome X?

A cluster of disorders is called the “Metabolic Syndrome” OR “Syndrome X” OR “The Dismetabolic syndrome” OR “The Deadly Quartet”.

In this cluster there are several disorders listed below:

As per the Position paper of National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (ATP-III) the Metabolic Syndrome or Syndrome X is defined as presence of any three of the following:

  • Waist Circumference greater than 102 cm (males), 88 cm (females)—i.e. excess abdominal fat or an "apple shape."
  • Triglycerides greater than 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L)
  • HDL cholesterol less than 40 mg/ dL (1.03 mmol/L)
  • Hypertension. Blood Pressure equal or greater than 130 systolic, 80 diastolic mmHg
  • Fasting glucose equal to or greater than 110 mg/dL (6.1 mmol/L)

The metabolic syndrome X is in the news because it is a risk factor for diabetes and  heart disease
